Getting Started with Mantrailing
Your complete beginner's guide to starting mantrailing with your dog. No prerequisites, no experience needed – just you, your dog and a sense of adventure!

No Prerequisites Needed!
You don't need ANY special training or equipment to get started. Mantrailing is based on your dog's natural ability to use their nose – something every dog is born knowing how to do!
What to Expect in Your First Session
Welcome & Introduction (10 minutes)
We'll start with a brief introduction to mantrailing theory. You'll learn about how dogs use their nose to track human scent and what body language to watch for while your dog works.
Don't worry if you feel overwhelmed – you'll learn most of this through practice! The introduction is just to give you a framework to understand what you'll be observing.
Equipment Setup (5 minutes)
We'll help you fit your dog with a Y-fitting harness (if you don't have one, we can lend you one) and attach the long line. You'll learn the proper way to hold the line and position yourself behind your dog.
Pro Tip: The harness is crucial! Unlike a collar, a Y-fitting harness allows your dog to breathe freely while pulling and won't restrict their chest or shoulders.
Your Dog's First Trail (15-20 minutes)
Here's where the magic happens! Your dog will be given a scent article to smell (a piece of clothing from the "missing person"), then they'll be released to follow the trail. Don't be surprised if your dog seems confused at first – this is completely normal!
First Trail Details:
- Distance: Very short (20-50 meters)
- Environment: Simple, open area with minimal distractions
- Age: Fresh trail (5-10 minutes old)
- Complexity: Straight line with no turns
The person at the end will make a big fuss of your dog with treats, toys and praise. This positive experience is what makes dogs LOVE mantrailing!
Second Trail & Debrief (20 minutes)
Once your dog understands the game, we'll do a second trail that's slightly more challenging – maybe a bit longer or with one gentle turn. Afterwards, we'll discuss what you observed and answer any questions.
Remember: Every dog progresses at their own pace. Some dogs "get it" immediately, while others need a few sessions. Both are completely normal!
How to Prepare
Before the Workshop
- Ensure your dog is well-rested (avoid tiring them out beforehand)
- Don't feed a full meal immediately before – light snack is fine
- Let your dog toilet before the session starts
- Bring high-value treats or your dog's favorite toy
- Check the weather and dress appropriately for outdoors
What to Bring
- Essential: Water for your dog
- Essential: High-value treats or favorite toy
- Recommended: Y-fitting harness (we can lend you one)
- Recommended: 8-10m long line (we can lend you one)
- Optional: Portable water bowl, towel (if muddy)
Mental Preparation
- •Be patient: Your dog may not understand immediately – and that's okay!
- •Stay calm: Your energy affects your dog. Stay relaxed and positive.
- •Trust your dog: They know how to use their nose – you're just learning to follow!
- •Have fun: This isn't a test. It's an adventure for both of you!
Your Step-by-Step Progression
Mantrailing is a journey, not a race. Here's how you and your dog will develop together over time:
Beginner (Sessions 1-3)
Distance:
20-100 meters
Environment:
Open areas, minimal distractions
Complexity:
Straight lines, 1-2 gentle turns
Focus: Understanding the game, learning to follow the scent, building confidence and positive associations.
Intermediate (Sessions 4-8)
Distance:
100-300 meters
Environment:
More distractions, busier areas
Complexity:
Multiple turns, obstacles
Focus: Discrimination skills, working through distractions, problem-solving when scent is unclear and older trails (20-30 minutes).
Advanced (Sessions 9+)
Distance:
300+ meters (can be kilometers!)
Environment:
Urban, forest, any terrain
Complexity:
Complex routes, contamination
Focus: Negative trails (person turns back), older trails (1+ hours), contaminated areas, working in challenging weather and handler independence.
Remember: Every dog-handler team progresses at their own pace. There's no rush – the journey is just as rewarding as the destination!
Common First Session Questions
What if my dog doesn't understand the game?
This is completely normal! Some dogs figure it out immediately, others need 2-3 sessions. We'll adapt the difficulty to your dog's learning pace and make sure they experience success. The key is keeping it fun and low-pressure.
My dog is reactive – will they be safe?
Yes! Mantrailing is ideal for reactive dogs because they work one-on-one with you in controlled environments. We can work with you separately from other dogs and the focused scent work often helps reduce reactivity over time.
How often should we practice?
For beginners, we recommend weekly sessions to maintain momentum and build skills consistently. As you progress, you can space sessions further apart (every 2-3 weeks) while practicing with friends between formal sessions.
Can I practice between workshops?
Absolutely! We encourage it. You'll need at least one other person to be the "missing person" and someone to hold your dog at the start. We'll teach you how to set up simple practice trails safely and effectively.
