East Auckland is one of my favourite parts of the city to train in, because it throws so much at a dog. You have the beaches and estuary edges around Bucklands Beach and Eastern Beach, the bush and clifftop tracks at Mangemangeroa, and the crowds and traffic around Botany Town Centre and Howick village. A dog that holds it together across all of that is a genuinely well-trained dog, and that is exactly what I aim for. The mix of established family homes on full sections and the newer townhouse growth around Botany and Flat Bush also means I work with everything from big backyards to compact courtyards.
The hardest thing for most East Auckland dogs is the off-leash beach life. On the northern end of Eastern Beach where dogs are off-leash all the time, there are always other dogs, birds and swimmers, and that is a lot of arousal to ask a dog to switch off from. I build solid recall and impulse control so your dog will turn on a dime even with a seagull lifting off in front of it. On the shared sealed waterfront paths between Bucklands Beach and Eastern Beach I work on loose-lead walking past joggers, cyclists and prams, and around the bush gullies at Macleans and the boardwalks and stairs at Mangemangeroa I train careful footing and a reliable 'leave it' around native birdlife. For the café and town-centre crowd I teach a proper settle so your dog can relax under the table at Howick village while life carries on around it.
I start in your home, because that is where habits are made and where most of the real work happens. I come to you, get the foundations solid in the lounge and the backyard, then we take it on location to the spots you actually use, whether that is Eastern Beach first thing in the morning or a loop through Macleans Park. My method is balanced, meaning I use the full range of training tools and consequences fairly and clearly so your dog understands exactly what is being asked. By the time we are done your dog listens just as well at a busy beach as it does on the kitchen floor.

Train Where You Walk
We train your dog at the actual locations you walk them. Real world training for real world reliability.
The northern end (north of the northernmost water pipe) is off-leash all times, which makes it a brilliant but demanding spot to proof recall around birds, swimmers and other off-leash dogs, while the southern end is off-leash 5pm to 10am over summer (1 December to 1 March) and prohibited 10am to 5pm, so I build a lot of recall work around that early-morning window.
The largest park in East Auckland, with open grassed paddocks, wooded gullies and a roughly 2km loop with views out to Rangitoto and Waiheke, so it is ideal for distance recall and settling your dog near the children's play area where dogs need to be on-leash.
A native bush and clifftop coastal walkway off Somerville Road with boardwalks, stairs and plenty of kererū and tūī, where I focus on calm on-leash handling, careful footing and a rock-solid 'leave it' around the birdlife.
Plus all local reserves, walkways and neighbourhood streets in East Auckland and surrounding areas.

Common Questions
Yes, this is one of the most common things I get called about in East Auckland. The northern end of Eastern Beach is off-leash all the time, so your dog is constantly surrounded by other dogs, birds and swimmers, which makes recall genuinely hard. I build recall in stages, starting in your home and backyard, then proofing it on location at the beach until your dog will come back even mid-chase.
It depends which end you are on. The northern beach, north of the northernmost water pipe, is off-leash all times. The southern beach is off-leash 5pm to 10am and prohibited 10am to 5pm over summer (1 December to 1 March), and off-leash all times the rest of the year. The boat ramp is on-leash at all times. I train a lot around that early-morning summer window before the beach fills up.
Absolutely. East Auckland is a real mix, from the larger homes on full sections around Bucklands Beach and Mellons Bay to the newer townhouses and higher-density developments around Botany and Flat Bush. I tailor the training to your actual space, whether that is a big backyard or a compact courtyard, and to the walks you do, so the plan fits your dog and your daily life.
Every programme is tailored to your dog and what you want to achieve, so there is no one-size price. The best next step is to have a look at the pricing page or book a consult, and I will put together a plan that suits your dog, your home and the local spots you use.
