Ellerslie is one of those Central Auckland suburbs where a dog's whole world happens within a few busy streets. You have the village strip with its cafés and outdoor seating, the train station, the racecourse and the motorway humming away close by, so even a quiet walk to the shops means navigating real distractions. That is exactly what makes it a great place to train. A dog that can hold it together in the middle of Ellerslie can hold it together just about anywhere.
The challenges I see most often here come straight out of the environment. Lead pulling and reactivity flare up around the village café strip where there is food on the ground and people everywhere, and recall falls apart at the off-leash zones like the southern end of Michaels Avenue Reserve or out on the loop at Ōrākei Basin where there are other dogs, cyclists and joggers sharing the path. A lot of Ellerslie dogs also live in townhouses or apartments with little or no yard, so the daily walk is their main outlet and it has to actually work. I train for all of it directly, building loose-lead walking past the cafés, a solid recall around the wildlife and the wetland at Michaels Avenue, and calm focus on the shared paths rather than just drilling commands in a quiet lounge.
I use balanced training, which means I draw on all four quadrants of operant conditioning to give your dog clear, fair information about what works and what does not. I always start in your home where your dog is comfortable, getting the foundations solid and sorting out the day-to-day stuff that drives you mad. Once that is locked in, I take the training out to the places you actually walk in Ellerslie, the village, the reserves, the basin loop, so the behaviour holds up in the real world and not just on the lounge floor.

Stop lunging, barking and pulling towards other dogs and people on walks.
Enjoy relaxed walks without your dog pulling your arm off.
Sit, stay, come, down and heel that work in real situations, not just your lounge.
Train Where You Walk
We train your dog at the actual locations you walk them. Real world training for real world reliability.
The southern end is off-leash at all times and the wetland along the northern section adds ducks and birdlife, which makes it my go-to spot for proofing recall and a reliable 'leave it' around real distractions.
This park is on-leash at all times across the whole reserve, so it is a calm, open space right by the shops and station where I work on loose-lead walking and steady focus before stepping up to busier environments.
Just north of Ellerslie, this roughly 2.9km loop is off-leash from the Ōrākei Road carpark through the West and East reserve, making the shared waterside path ideal for recall and calm dog-dog manners around cyclists and joggers.
Plus all local reserves, walkways and neighbourhood streets in Ellerslie and surrounding areas.

Common Questions
The southern end of Michaels Avenue Reserve is off-leash at all times, while the rest of the reserve is on-leash near the playground and sports fields. Ellerslie Domain is on-leash everywhere, so for a proper off-leash run nearby I often head to Ōrākei Basin just to the north. Auckland's dog rules were updated from 1 August 2025, so I always check the signage on the ground and build recall training around wherever we are training that day.
Absolutely, that is one of the most common things I sort out here. The village strip is full of food smells, foot traffic and outdoor seating, so I train loose-lead walking and calm focus in that exact environment rather than just at home. We start with the foundations indoors and then take it straight out onto the streets you actually walk.
Not at all, and it is really common around here with all the modern townhouses and apartments. It just means your daily walk is doing the heavy lifting for exercise and mental stimulation, so I make sure that walk is genuinely useful, with a dog that walks nicely and listens. We do the foundations in your home then build it out to the local reserves and the basin loop.
Every programme is tailored to your dog and what you are dealing with, whether that is reactivity around the village, recall at the off-leash zones or general manners at home, so I do not quote a flat figure. Have a look at the pricing page or book a consult and we will work out exactly what your dog needs.
