Browns Bay is one of those East Coast Bays suburbs where dog owners are spoiled for choice, and that variety is exactly what makes it such a good place to train. You have got the beach and grassed reserve right in the heart of town, the woodland and waterways of Sherwood Reserve a few streets back, and a compact buzzing town centre full of cafés all within a short walk. Your dog is exposed to real life every single day here, and I use that to build a dog that stays calm and listens no matter what is going on around them.
The challenges I see most in Browns Bay come straight out of that environment. Down at Sherwood Reserve the ducks, pūkeko and eels in the waterways set a lot of dogs off, and the weekly parkrun crowd adds joggers and movement that test even a steady dog. At the beachfront the mix of other off-leash dogs, gulls, swimmers and kids is a lot to handle, and the strip of cafés along Clyde Road and Bute Road asks your dog to settle quietly while food and foot traffic swirl past. I train recall, impulse control and loose-lead walking in exactly these spots, so the skills hold up where you actually need them.
I work using balanced training, which means I use all four quadrants of operant conditioning and tailor the approach to your dog rather than forcing one method onto every animal. I start in your home where it is calm and we lay the foundations, then we take it on location to the places you walk every day, whether that is Browns Bay Beach, Sherwood Reserve or the town centre footpaths. By the time we are done your dog is reliable in the real Browns Bay, not just in the quiet of your lounge.

Train Where You Walk
We train your dog at the actual locations you walk them. Real world training for real world reliability.
A sandy beach with grassed reserve looking out to Rangitoto, off-leash all times outside summer but off-leash only before 10am and after 5pm from 1 December to 1 March, which makes that early window perfect for recall work before the crowds arrive.
A woodland reserve with boardwalks over Taiaotea Creek and waterways full of ducks, pūkeko and eels, off-leash throughout the reserve, so it is my go-to spot for proofing recall and a solid 'leave it' around strong prey triggers.
Open grassy sports fields that join onto Sherwood Reserve to form an easy flat loop, great for distance and duration work, though keep your dog on-leash and check the signage as the fields are used for organised sport.
Plus all local reserves, walkways and neighbourhood streets in Browns Bay and surrounding areas.

Common Questions
Outside summer, from 2 March to 30 November, the beach is off-leash at all times. During summer, from 1 December to 1 March, dogs are off-leash before 10am and after 5pm but prohibited on the beach between 10am and 5pm. I build a lot of recall training around that early-morning summer window before it gets busy.
Sherwood Reserve on Glencoe Road is off-leash at all times throughout the reserve, so it is the spot I use most for off-leash recall and impulse control. Just keep your dog on-leash near the playground when it is in use, and the waterways there are a brilliant real-world test for steadiness around ducks and pūkeko.
Yes, that prey drive around the waterways is one of the most common things I work on in Browns Bay. I train a reliable recall and a strong 'leave it' on location at Sherwood so your dog learns to switch its focus back to you even with wildlife right in front of it, rather than just hoping the lead holds.
Every programme is tailored to your dog and what you want to achieve, so the price depends on where your dog is at and the goals we set together. Have a look at the pricing page or book a consult and I will give you a clear picture of what your dog needs.
