Onehunga is one of Auckland's oldest suburbs and it has changed a lot lately, with character villas sitting alongside new townhouses and apartments going up near the train station. That mix is exactly why it's such a good place to train a dog. Whether you've got a standalone home with a yard or you're in a townhouse sharing a stairwell and a balcony, I train your dog to settle and behave in the space you actually live in, not just in a quiet lounge.
The challenge here is the sheer amount going on. You've got the busy Onehunga Mall shopping strip and cafés, Dress Smart pulling in crowds, the train station and buses, and the SH20 and SH1 interchange roaring away in the background. Down on the Manukau foreshore there's water, birds, cyclists and other dogs all in one place. I train your dog to stay calm and focused through all of it, building loose-lead walking past the cafés, solid recall at Onehunga Bay Reserve and steady leash manners along the Taumanu shared paths where seabirds nest and control really matters.
I start in your home, because that's where most of the real habits form, the toileting, the door manners, the separation when you head out, the way your dog greets visitors. Once we've got the foundations solid, I take the training out onto your local spots, Onehunga Bay Reserve, the Taumanu foreshore and the Waikaraka cycleway, so your dog learns to listen with the harbour, the traffic and the crowds all happening around them. I use balanced training across all four quadrants, which simply means clear rewards and fair, consistent boundaries so your dog knows exactly where they stand.

We Can Help
Every Auckland suburb has unique challenges. Here is what we help Onehunga dog owners with.
Your dog comes back every time, even with distractions at Onehunga Bay Reserve.
Stop lunging, barking and pulling towards other dogs and people on walks.
Enjoy relaxed walks without your dog pulling your arm off.
Sit, stay, come, down and heel that work in real situations, not just your lounge.
Train Where You Walk
We train your dog at the actual locations you walk them. Real world training for real world reliability.
A big open grass space beside a tidal lagoon that's off-leash in all general areas, making it my go-to spot for building reliable recall and an off-leash 'come' once your dog has earned that freedom (dogs stay on-leash near the playground and must keep clear of the skate ramp and fitness gear).
A reclaimed coastal reserve with sandy beaches and around 1.5km of shared walk and cycle path on the Manukau, where the harbour side is mostly on-leash with seabird-protection zones, so I focus here on calm loose-lead walking and a rock-solid 'leave it' around birds and passing cyclists.
The Manukau Foreshore East Cycleway is the one off-leash stretch here, running from the end of the boardwalk to 213 Johnson Drive, which makes it a great proving ground for recall and impulse control with bikes and other dogs moving past (the rest of Waikaraka Park is on-leash).
Plus all local reserves, walkways and neighbourhood streets in Onehunga and surrounding areas.

Common Questions
Onehunga Bay Reserve is off-leash across its general grass areas, which makes it the best local spot for recall work, and there's an off-leash stretch on the Manukau Foreshore East Cycleway by Waikaraka Park running from the end of the boardwalk to 213 Johnson Drive. The Taumanu harbour foreshore is mostly on-leash with seabird-protection zones, so I always recommend checking the signage before letting your dog loose. Rules can change, so it's worth a quick look at the live Auckland Council page too.
Absolutely, and a lot of my Onehunga clients are in exactly that situation with the new developments near the station. I train for apartment and townhouse life specifically, toileting routines without a lawn, calm behaviour in lifts and stairwells, quiet settling on a balcony and handling separation when you're out. We work with the space you've got rather than wishing you had a quarter-acre.
Yes. Onehunga is loud, between the SH20 and SH1 interchange, the buses and the busy Mall strip, and a lot of dogs find that overwhelming at first. I build your dog's confidence gradually, starting calm at home then working closer to the noise on the footpaths and around the cafés, so they learn to stay settled and switched on instead of reacting. It's one of the most common things I'm called out for here.
Every dog and household is different, so I tailor the programme to what your dog actually needs rather than charging a one-size-fits-all rate. The best way to get an accurate idea is to have a look at the pricing page or book a consult, and we'll map out a plan that suits you and your dog.
