Puhoi is a small historic village wrapped in farmland, bush valleys and the Puhoi River, about 40 minutes north of the Auckland CBD just off SH1. Most of the dogs I work with here live on lifestyle blocks or semi-rural family homes, so they have plenty of land but rarely see footpaths, crowds or traffic. That mix makes Puhoi a brilliant and slightly tricky place to train: your dog is calm and confident at home, but the real test is how they behave around livestock, the village café crowds and the rivers nearby.
The biggest thing I train for out here is stock. With sheep and cattle on the surrounding farms and lifestyle blocks, a dog with a strong chase drive is a genuine risk, so I focus hard on recall and impulse control around livestock before anything else. The other distractions are just as local: native bush full of birds and scent, the weekend foot traffic around the Puhoi Pub, General Store and Tearooms, and the water and waterfowl down at the Puhoi River and the Wenderholm estuary. I use balanced training across all four quadrants of operant conditioning so your dog learns to switch off and listen even when the environment is loud, busy or full of prey.
I start in your home, where your dog is comfortable, and build the foundations there: clear communication, calm behaviour and a recall you can actually trust. Once that is solid we take it on location to the spots you and your dog actually use, like the riverside walkway in the village or the grassy flats at Wenderholm, so the training holds up in the real world and not just the lounge. Everything is customised to your dog, your property and the way you live out here in Puhoi.

We Can Help
Every Auckland suburb has unique challenges. Here is what we help Puhoi dog owners with.
Your dog comes back every time, even with distractions at Puhoi River Walks.
Stop lunging, barking and pulling towards other dogs and people on walks.
Enjoy relaxed walks without your dog pulling your arm off.
Sit, stay, come, down and heel that work in real situations, not just your lounge.
Areas We Cover
Our Puhoi dog training service covers these suburbs and surrounding areas.
Train Where You Walk
We train your dog at the actual locations you walk them. Real world training for real world reliability.
Just south of the village at Waiwera, this park has around 900m of beach beside grassy picnic flats and bush tracks, with dog access zoned by colour on the official park map, so I use it to proof recall and loose-lead walking in the leashed areas while we confirm the current zones together before any off-leash work.
A flat riverside track leaving from the village centre past the historic pub, store and tearooms, which makes it the ideal place to practise calm on-lead walking and a reliable 'leave it' around weekend foot traffic and waterfowl.
A short drive north with sheltered bays, native bush and the Cudlipp Loop Track where dogs are on-leash only, so I train steady lead manners and focus around the coastal walking tracks and Mita Bay.
Plus all local reserves, walkways and neighbourhood streets in Puhoi and surrounding areas.

Common Questions
Yes, this is one of the most common things I work on out here. With livestock on so many of the surrounding farms and lifestyle blocks, I make stock-proofing and a rock-solid recall the priority, building impulse control at home first and then proofing it around real distractions so your dog learns to hold steady instead of chasing.
Most public reserves around here are leash-only or have seasonal restrictions, and Wenderholm has its dog access zoned by colour on the official park map. Auckland Council also brought in new dog walking rules from 1 August 2025, so I always check the current council map with you before we plan any off-leash training rather than relying on older information.
Definitely. A lot of Puhoi dogs are under-socialised to busy environments simply because home is so quiet, so I build calm confidence around the things they don't see every day, like the weekend crowds at the village café and pub or the fast traffic and few footpaths on the rural roads, working up gradually so it never overwhelms them.
Every programme is tailored to your dog, your property and what you want to achieve, so there is no one-size price. The best next step is to book a consult or have a look at the pricing page, and I'll put together a plan that suits you.
