Mantrailing Equipment Guide

Simple, specialised equipment designed to keep your dog safe, comfortable and free to work naturally. Here's everything you need to know.

Don't Have Equipment Yet? No Problem!

We can lend you a harness and long line for your first workshop session. This lets you try mantrailing before investing in equipment. If you and your dog love it (and we're confident you will!), we'll guide you on exactly what to purchase.

First-timer tip: Just bring water, treats and your dog. We'll handle the rest!
What You Need

Essential Equipment

1

Y-Fitting Harness (ESSENTIAL)

Dog wearing properly fitted Y-front harness for mantrailing

Why Y-Fitting is Critical

A Y-fitting harness has the front strap shaped like a "Y" that sits between your dog's front legs, rather than across their chest. This design is essential because:

  • No chest restriction:

Allows your dog to breathe freely while pulling on the line, which is essential when they're working hard following a scent trail

  • Even weight distribution:

Distributes pressure across shoulders and chest evenly, preventing strain or injury

  • Freedom of movement:

Doesn't restrict shoulder movement, letting your dog move naturally

  • Back attachment point:

The attachment point should be on the back (not front) to allow natural pulling

DO NOT USE:

  • Collars: Can damage trachea and restrict breathing when pulling
  • H-harnesses: Strap goes across chest, restricting breathing
  • Front-clip harnesses: Designed to discourage pulling (opposite of what we want!)
  • No-pull harnesses: These restrict movement and are counterproductive

Long Line (8-10m Static Line)

2

8-10 Meter Static Long Line (ESSENTIAL)

Why Static (Not Retractable)?

A static long line is a must for safety and effectiveness:

  • Safety:

Retractable leads can snap, causing serious injuries to both dogs and handlers. The thin cord can also cause rope burn if it wraps around legs.

  • Better control:

You can feel exactly how much tension is on the line, which helps you read your dog's behaviour and communicate more effectively.

  • Consistent feedback:

Static lines don't create constant tension like retractables do, allowing your dog to move naturally and you to read their body language clearly.

  • Durability:

Static lines are more durable and won't malfunction or break unexpectedly

NEVER USE RETRACTABLE LEADS FOR MANTRAILING

Retractable/flexi leads are dangerous for mantrailing. They can snap under tension, cause severe injuries if they wrap around people or dogs and the locking mechanism can fail. The constant tension also prevents proper communication between handler and dog.

Length & Material Specifications

Length: 8-10 meters (25-33 feet)

This length gives your dog freedom to work while maintaining safety and control. Shorter lines restrict your dog; longer lines become difficult to manage and can tangle.

Material: Biothane or coated webbing

Biothane is waterproof, doesn't absorb odors, easy to clean and won't get heavy when wet. It's durable and has just enough give without stretching.

Width: 15-20mm (smaller dogs) or 20-25mm (larger dogs)

Wider lines are easier to grip and less likely to cause rope burn if they slide through your hands.

Clip: Lightweight bolt snap or trigger clip

Avoid heavy carabiner-style clips that add unnecessary weight. The clip should be strong but lightweight.

Where to Buy

Online specialty stores: Search for "biothane long line" or "dog tracking line"

Local pet stores: Some carry long lines, but selection may be limited

Custom makers: Many small businesses make custom biothane lines in any length/color

Price range: NZD $30-70 depending on length and quality

Rewards: Treats or Toys (ESSENTIAL)

Your dog needs to be heavily rewarded when they find the "missing person." This positive reinforcement is what makes dogs LOVE mantrailing and want to do it again and again.

High-Value Treats

Choose treats your dog doesn't get regularly – this makes them extra special and increases motivation:

  • Cheese (cubed or string cheese)
  • Cooked chicken or beef
  • Hot dogs (cut into small pieces)
  • Liver treats
  • Freeze-dried meat treats

Favorite Toys

Some dogs are more toy-motivated than food-motivated. If that's your dog, bring their absolute favorite toy:

  • Tug toys
  • Ball (for play, not just fetch)
  • Squeaky toys
  • Rope toys

Pro tip: Bring LOTS of rewards. You'll use them generously to keep your dog highly motivated. Don't be stingy – this is how your dog learns to love the work!

Nice to Have

Recommended Equipment

These items aren't essential but will make your mantrailing experience more comfortable:

Water & Bowl

Your dog will be working hard and will get thirsty. Bring fresh water and a portable bowl. Collapsible bowls are convenient and take up minimal space.

Treat Pouch

Keeps treats accessible and your hands free. Clip-on pouches work well. Make sure it closes securely so treats don't fall out when you're moving.

Comfortable Clothing

You'll be walking through various terrains. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Layers are good for changing conditions.

Towel

If trails might be muddy or wet, bring a towel to wipe down your dog before they get back in the car. Also useful for drying off if it rains.

Rain Jacket

We trail in most weather conditions! A waterproof jacket for you (and optionally your dog) keeps you comfortable. Light rain doesn't stop scent work.

Gloves

If your dog pulls hard on the line, gloves can prevent rope burn and give you better grip. Work gloves or gardening gloves work well.
