Loose Lead Walking Workshop

Master the Skill That Makes Every Walk Enjoyable

Loading...

Why Loose Lead Walking Matters

Pulling on the lead is the most common complaint from dog owners. It transforms what should be an enjoyable bonding experience into a daily struggle, leaving both you and your dog frustrated and stressed. Every walk becomes a battle of wills rather than a pleasure.

Our Loose Lead Walking Workshop is a focused 3-week intensive programme designed to address this single skill with precision and expertise. Unlike general obedience classes that cover multiple topics, this workshop dedicates every session to mastering the art of calm, connected walking. You'll learn proven techniques that build engagement between you and your dog, transforming walks from stressful to stress-free.

This programme is suitable for all ages and breeds. Whether you have a strong puller, an easily distracted young dog or a rescue learning to walk calmly for the first time, our small class sizes ensure personalised attention and rapid progress. In just three weeks, you'll develop the skills and consistency needed to enjoy peaceful walks together.

What Your Dog Will Learn

1

Week 1: Foundations

Building the fundamental engagement and focus that prevents pulling before it starts. We work in low-distraction areas to establish solid basics.

  • Engagement at walk start (the tune-up drill)
  • Attention exercises and handler focus
  • Basic heel position awareness
  • Reward timing and marker training
  • Red light/green light game
2

Week 2: Building Reliability

Increasing duration, distance and adding mild distractions. Your dog learns to maintain position through changes and challenges.

  • Longer walking distances with loose lead
  • Direction changes and handler unpredictability
  • Speed variations (slow, normal, fast)
  • Environmental distractions (stationary triggers)
  • U-turns and emergency stops
3

Week 3: Real-World Mastery

Applying all skills in real-world environments with high-level distractions. Graduate-level walking in public spaces.

  • High-distraction environments (parks, streets)
  • Multiple distractions simultaneously
  • Public spaces and busy areas
  • Walking past other dogs and people calmly
  • Maintaining standards without constant treats

What to Bring

Flat Collar or Harness

Well-fitted flat collar or back-clip harness of your choice.

1.8m Standard Lead

A fixed-length lead approximately 1.8 metres long. Retractable leads are not suitable as they teach pulling and provide no control.

High-Value Treats

Small, soft treats that your dog finds irresistible. Think chicken, cheese or commercial training treats the size of a small fingernail.

Treat Pouch

A pouch worn at your waist for easy access to rewards. This keeps your hands free and treats readily available for perfect timing.

Comfortable Shoes

Wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for outdoor training. We'll be moving around different environments throughout the sessions.

What to Expect

Each 90-Minute Session

  • Welcome & Review (10 mins): Check-in on homework progress and address any challenges from the previous week.
  • New Skills Introduction (20 mins): Demonstration and explanation of this week's techniques and exercises.
  • Hands-On Practice (45 mins): Practical training time with individual coaching and feedback from your trainer.
  • Homework Briefing (15 mins): Clear instructions for daily practice exercises to complete before the next session.

Daily Homework (15 Minutes)

Success in this programme requires consistent daily practice between sessions. We recommend 15 minutes per day broken into shorter sessions if needed:

  • 5 minutes of engagement exercises before your daily walk
  • 10 minutes of focused loose lead walking practice
  • Practice in different locations throughout the week

Signs of Progress

Most owners notice improvement within the first week. Look for these positive changes:

Your dog checks in with you more frequently
Less tension in the lead during walks
Quicker response to direction changes
Calmer demeanour when encountering distractions
Longer periods of walking in heel position
Reduced pulling towards triggers
