At 100%K9, our mission is to create safer interactions between children and dogs through education and awareness. Our Safe Dogs | Safe Kids program is specifically designed to reduce dog-related incidents by teaching children and their families the fundamentals of dog safety. We believe that with the right knowledge children can form positive, respectful relationships with dogs reducing the risk of harm for both.
Promoting Safe Interactions Between Kids and Dogs
Our educational initiatives focus on schools and community settings, delivering age-appropriate and engaging presentations that cover:
How to safely approach and interact with dogs
Identifying signs of stress or discomfort in dogs
Best practices for handling dogs in various situations
How to respond to potentially aggressive dog behaviour
How to Promote Responsible Dog Ownership
We also offer community workshops that extend these lessons to families and caregivers empowering them with the tools to reinforce safe dog interactions at home and in public spaces.
Our Approach
What We Do
We take a hands-on interactive approach to education using real-life examples and demonstrations to help children understand dog behaviour. Our team works closely with schools and community groups to tailor presentations to meet the needs of the audience, ensuring the content is both accessible and memorable. We offer practical tips and step-by-step guidance to help children develop confidence in how they approach dogs.
Our community workshops are an essential component of our program, expanding the message beyond schools and engaging entire communities in dog safety education.
Engaging with Schools and Communities
How We Do It
Dog-related injuries involving children are a growing concern in Auckland. The statistics are alarming:
In 2022, 2,500 dog-related injuries were reported nationwide, with over 60% involving children under the age of 12.
Auckland saw approximately 900 dog bite incidents in 2023, many of which occurred in household settings involving family dogs.
Children aged 5 to 9 are the most at risk, often because they don’t recognise the warning signs of dog discomfort or stress.
These preventable incidents result in both physical injuries and emotional trauma for children as well as the dogs involved. At 100%K9, we believe that education is the key to reducing these numbers. Teaching children and families how to safely interact with dogs can help prevent unnecessary injuries and ensure safer, more positive relationships between children and their pets.
The Urgent Need for Education
Why We Do It
Our goal is not only to educate children but also to build safer communities where dogs and humans co-exist harmoniously. Through our Safe Kids | Safe Dogs program and community workshops we are bridging the gap between human and canine communication, creating a future where fewer incidents occur and children feel empowered around dogs.
Join us in this important mission to make Auckland safer for children and dogs.
